Email: Required to verify eligibility and deliver Bounce Back Coupons.
Phone: Required to prevent duplicate redemptions. SMS is optional and only used with consent.
Email Address (Required)
The pet owner's email address is required to:
- Confirm this bundle is being redeemed by a real person (it acts as a unique identifier)
- Deliver Bounce Back Coupons, including one email per coupon, when available
Their email is used only to manage their rewards and communication related to this program.
If you are subscribed to the
Astro Marketing Suite, any email addresses that are collected via STL will also be added to your mailing list.
Mobile Phone Number (Required)
The pet owner's phone number is required to:
- Prevent excessive Adoption Bundles from being redeemed by the same person within the 365 day window at other stores or multiple times at the same store
- Protect the integrity of the Sharing the Love program for retailers, brands, and adopters
📱 SMS consent is optional
- If a pet owner do not opt in to SMS (uncheck the box on the form):
- Their phone number is used only as a unique ID and will never be used for communication
- If a pet owner does opt in to SMS (check the box on the form):
- They may receive future text alerts letting them know when they have a limited-time coupon available at your store
- If you are subscribed to the Astro Marketing Suite and have SMS enabled, they will be added to your text recipient list
SMS alerts would only be sent to opted in pet owners if:
- A brand has an eligible coupon that includes SMS alerts, and
- Your store is enrolled in that coupon or an Adoption Program with an associated Bounce Back Coupon
Note: SMS coupon alerts are not currently active in Astro, but may be introduced in a future update later this year.
The Sharing the Love Adoption Rewards program was created to do something special: welcome newly adopted pets into their forever homes while supporting independent pet retailers and the brands that stand behind them.
To keep that mission intact—and to ensure the program remains fair, sustainable, and available long-term—we now require both an email address and a mobile phone number when a pet owner redeems an Adoption Bundle.
Here’s why that matters.
1. Protecting the Integrity of the Program
Sharing the Love is a high-value reward. It’s designed to be a meaningful welcome gift—not something that can be abused or redeemed multiple times across stores.
Email addresses and phone numbers act as unique identifiers within Astro Loyalty, allowing the system to:
- Confirm a pet owner’s eligibility
- Enforce program limits (such as one bundle per species)
- Prevent duplicate or “store-hopping” redemptions
Without both identifiers, the system can’t reliably tell whether a bundle has already been redeemed elsewhere—putting retailers and brands at risk.
Requiring this information ensures that every bundle goes to a truly eligible adopter, just as the program intends.
2. Ensuring Fairness for Retailers and Brands
Sharing the Love only works when it’s balanced.
Brands invest in the program with the expectation that:
- Redemptions are legitimate
- Products are reaching new pet parents
- Participation drives long-term loyalty—not one-time giveaways
Retailers, meanwhile, need confidence that:
- They’re not being penalized for redemptions already claimed elsewhere
- Every bundle redeemed in their store is valid
Requiring both an email and phone number protects everyone involved and helps keep brands engaged—so the program can continue offering valuable products to future adopters.
3. Creating a Better Experience for Pet Owners
This information doesn’t just protect the program—it enhances the pet owner experience.
When a pet owner provides their email and phone number:
- Their Adoption Bundle is tied to a real loyalty account
- They can receive important follow-up communications related to their included 'Sharing The Love' Bounce Back Coupons, as well as future messages from your store thanks to the Astro Marketing Suite
- They gain visibility into future rewards and savings via the Astro Mobile App
This ensures adopters don’t just walk away with free products—they’re welcomed into a long-term relationship with their local pet store.
4. Supporting Bounce Back Coupons & Follow-Up Rewards
One of the most valuable components of Sharing the Love is what happens after the bundle is redeemed.
Email and phone numbers allow brands and retailers to deliver Bounce Back Coupons at the right time—when the pet owner has had a chance to try the product and is nearing a repeat purchase window.
This means:
- Better timing
- Higher redemption rates
- Stronger brand impressions
- More repeat store visits
Without accurate contact information, these follow-ups simply wouldn’t be possible.
5. Transparency, Privacy, and Respect
We know personal information is sensitive—and it’s important to be clear about how it’s used.
- Email and phone numbers are collected solely to verify eligibility, prevent abuse, and support program communications
- Information is handled within Astro’s secure platform
- Data is not collected “just because”—it serves a specific, necessary purpose
At its core, this requirement is about respecting the program, the participants, and the adopting families it was built to serve.
In Summary
Requiring both an email address and phone number allows Sharing the Love to:
✔ Prevent fraud and duplicate redemptions
✔ Protect retailers and brand partners
✔ Deliver meaningful follow-up rewards
✔ Create lasting loyalty—not just one-time giveaways
✔ Ensure the program remains available for future adopters
Sharing the Love is about doing good—and doing it the right way.
These requirements help ensure that every bundle truly supports the pets, people, and independent retailers at the heart of the program.
It’s completely normal for some pet owners to feel cautious about sharing personal information. A little transparency goes a long way. Here are a few simple, honest ways to explain why their email and phone number are being requested—and how that information is used.
“When we redeem this Adoption Bundle for you, you’ll receive a thank-you email and a small number of follow-up coupons related to the products you’re getting today.”
💡 Tip:
You can tell them exactly how many emails to expect by checking the pending cards on the Checkout screen—this helps set clear expectations and builds trust.
Reassure Them About Email Frequency
“You’re not being added to a bunch of random mailing lists—just ours here at the store.”
You can personalize this with your own cadence:
- “We typically send about [X] emails per month.”
- “We usually only email when there’s a reward, reminder, or special offer.”
Emphasize Control & Choice
“If you ever decide you don’t want to hear from us anymore, you can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any email.”
This puts the power back in the pet owner’s hands—and that matters.
Address Privacy Head-On
“Your email address is protected and isn’t shared with third parties for marketing. It’s used to manage your rewards and make sure this program stays fair for everyone.”
“It also helps us monitor our redemptions, which protects the brands and keeps this program available long-term so we can continue to reward pet adoptions.”
Connect It to the App (Optional, but Helpful)
“If you’d like, you can also download our
free mobile app. It explains our data privacy policy in detail and lets you track your rewards and coupons.”
It’s helpful to note:
- Their email address becomes their username for the app
- Having an email on file is required to log in and view rewards
This reframes the email as access, not just contact.
Final Tip for Staff
If a pet owner still feels hesitant, reassure them with empathy:
“I totally understand—sharing info can feel personal. We just want to make sure you receive your rewards and that everything stays secure and fair.”
Calm, confident explanations—not pressure—are what build trust.
