What are Astro Coupons?

An Astro Retailer is a smart retailer! You understand the importance of giving back to your loyal customers as a thank you for their continued patronage. The brands you love are the same way. They encourage brand loyalty with Frequent Buyer Programs and Astro Offers, and now they can say 'thank you,' 'we miss you,' or 'welcome home' to their customers with exclusive Astro Coupons.
  1. 'Thank You' Coupons - Brands can send coupons to their active customer base to encourage their customers who are regularly purchasing items from within one of their product lines to try complementary products from within another of their brand's product lines. This introduces loyal customers to additional products they’re likely to love. Example: A discount on Brand-A's raw topper or mix-in for customers who frequently purchase Brand-A's dry food. 
  2. 'We Miss You' Coupons - Brands can help your store re-engage customers who have stopped adding punches to a Frequent Buyer Card by offering targeted discounts. Example: A $10 off coupon for any qualifying item from Brand-A's Frequent Buyer program that a customer has stopped participating in.
  3. 'Welcome Home' Coupons - Also known as 'Sharing The Love' Bounce Back Coupons, these serve as customer acquisition tools, introducing new pet owners to your Frequent Buyer Programs. Example: A discount for new pet owners who choose Brand-A's product for their Adoption Bundle, redeemable on a future purchase of an eligible Brand-A Frequent Buyer item.
In the past, brands have used various methods to deliver these coupons to your customers. Such as tear-off coupon books, mailed vouchers, non-targeted email campaigns, social media coupons, or a rep would drop off a stack of paper coupons. Then those would have to be stuffed into an envelope to mail, or the rep would have to circle back to pick them up once redeemed. In short, either the customer is missing out on an earned promotion, you are missing out on a sale, or you are waiting and waiting for your reimbursement.

Astro Coupons are both digitally delivered and digitally redeemed; no paper, nowhere, no how! They are delivered directly to your customers and are only redeemable at your store. They are simple to redeem and reimbursements are credited automatically. And best of all, Astro and our brand partners handle all the marketing!

Astro Coupons are FREE for all Astro Retailers to participate in.

Astro Coupons issued to your customers can only be redeemed at your store! 

A qualifying Petowner who shops at your store will receive an Astro Coupon via email. This email will explain the promotion and will instruct them that they can only redeem that coupon at your store within a set period of time. The customers receiving these emails are already your customers and will see the added benefits to continue shopping with you in the years to come.

Customers can only redeem an Astro Coupon at the Astro Pet Shop their qualifying Astro Pet Owner Account is associated with. If a qualifying Pet Owner Account is associated with an Astro Multi-Location Pet Shop Account, that customer can visit any one of those locations within the Multi-Location Account to redeem their coupon.

Astro Coupons are Petowner-specific and are not available to every customer.

Astro Coupons are pet owner-specific and not available to all customers. Unlike Astro Offers, which are open to everyone, Astro Coupons are digitally linked to specific Pet Owner Accounts. There are no paper coupons to scan or track—everything needed for eligibility and redemption is seamlessly integrated into Astro.

Brands choose Astro Coupons over Astro Offers when they have a specific goal that requires targeted promotions, such as re-engaging lapsed customers. Because of their exclusivity, Astro Coupons often provide deeper discounts than broader promotions.

Idea
You can export a list of customers who are eligible for an Astro Coupon before deciding whether you will participate. If you opt-in, you can periodically export that same list to determine who has redeemed the coupon and who has not. The coupon itself will also show you numerically how many have redeemed their coupon, how many have coupon's pending, and how many have let their coupon expire.

Coupons are sent by Astro from the Astro platform via email to your customer.

You do not have to worry about distributing the coupons to the only customers who qualify, we have you covered there! An email notification will be sent to all eligible customers who have an email address saved on their Pet Owner Account. If a customer is missing an email address, they will still be able to redeem the coupon via their Pet Owner Account during checkout in Astro.

Idea
If you are utilizing the Marketing Suite you can use Pending Coupon Reminders once the coupon becomes active to periodically send reminders to those customers who have yet to redeem their coupon. Just make sure that you are only sending your campaign to customers with pending coupons and not everyone.

Also, in accordance to our extremely strict Privacy Policy Rules, your customers are only contacted in such a way that drives their business back to your store.

Your customers have the option to opt-out of these coupon mailers, there will be a link at the bottom of the email allowing them to remove themselves from any coupon marketing list. If they opt out, they will not receive any more email notifications about Astro Coupons, but they will still be able to redeem them in-store. Opting out only removes them from coupon marketing emails—it does not affect their participation in Frequent Buyer, Astro Offers, or other store communications via email, push notifications, or text.

Coupons are also displayed at checkout for eligible customers.

There is not need to check a list as if you are guarding a private party, Astro has you covered there as well!
If a customer qualifies for a coupon, a preview of the coupon will appear at the top of their Checkout screen, along with a link to view eligible items. Once an eligible item is added to their Checkout page, the "Redeem" button will activate. Simply click "Redeem," and you're done!

Notice of coupon events are sent to retailers before the coupons are sent out, so you have plenty of time to prepare.

This will give you time to get organized and stock up on the promoted products. Do not put up any signage in your store pertaining to the details of a specific coupon promotion. 

Idea
Remember, Astro Coupons are customer-specific, meaning not everyone will have access to the same coupons- so do not put up signage about a specific coupon in your store, or email the coupon details to all of your customers.
That being said, any customer has the potential become eligible for future coupons. To help your customers take advantage of Astro Coupons, encourage them to download the Astro Mobile App, where they can view any special coupons they qualify for.

You have the option to Opt-Out of certain coupons. You are not able to opt-out of Bounce Back Coupons linked to Adoption Programs that your store has enrolled in.

You will need to opt-in to participate. Keep in mind, these coupons are targeted and customer specific. They are only sent to your customers who are already purchasing the qualifying brand or brand products. However, in some cases it may be possible that your store does not stock a product line that your brand may be promoting. You can review the qualifying product list before making your decision.

Ex. Let's say you carry Monster Naturals Grain-Free, and they just launched a new line- Monster Naturals Grain-Friendly, but you haven't decided yet whether or not you want to add their new line so you do not carry it at your store. Then Monster Naturals launches a coupon to promote their new Grain-Friendly
line and those coupons are scheduled to be sent to your customers. At this point you will receive an email about this promotion and you have 2-Weeks to decide whether to bring on the line and participate in the promotion or Opt-Out of the Astro Coupon so your customers are not alerted.

Alert
Your store will be automatically Opted-Out from a coupon if no decision is entered prior to the coupon launch date.
You will not be able to change your participation status once a coupon is launched.

Redemptions are automatically reported to the same Distributor you have selected for the corresponding Frequent Buyer Enrollment.

You can edit your fulfillment partner on the coupon if needed.   

Ex. Let's go back to our on-going example of Monster Naturals. They are promoting their new Grain-Friendly line with a new Astro Coupon. Your store is already enrolled in the Monster Naturals | Official Frequent Buyer - Buy 10 Get 1 Free program with your distributor Animal Goods Inc., so therefore all Monster Naturals Astro Coupon redemptions will automatically report to Animal Goods Inc.! Easy right!

Brands can only send coupons to their established customers.

A brand can only issue Astro Coupons to their established customer base: customers who have engaged with their Frequent Buyers, Astro Offers, or Adoption Rewards programs on Astro. Astro Coupons were designed to help brands and their independent retail partners, reward brand loyalty, re-engage lapsed customers, and help new pet owners get started on a path to longterm loyalty.

Your favorite brands wanted a targeted way to promote their new or existing items to your customers while still encouraging them to shop directly with you. They also wanted a way to thank their existing customers by offering them discounts here and there on items they are already purchasing on a regular basis.

Astro Coupons are NOT a means to convert a customer from one brand to another, or to lure a customer from one store to another. 

Coupons can be either Dollars Off or Free Goods.

Depending on how the Brand wants to promote their products they can decide whether to reward $Off or a Free Good. The Astro Coupon Redemption Pop-up will tell you exactly what to reward the customer. Depending on the reward issued, the redemption and future credit will either appear on your Distributor Rebate Credit Batches Report or your Distributor Free Goods Credit Batches Report.

The Two Types of MFG Sponsored Coupons

There are two main types of MFG (Manufacturer / Brand) Sponsored Coupons on Astro. They share similarities, like how they are redeemed and reported to your Distributor. The main difference between them is how the customer qualifies to receive them and how you choose to participate in them. 

Standard Astro MFG Sponsored Coupon

Astro will announce these coupons to you beforehand so you will be aware of their existence and prepare. During this pre-launch period you will be able to decide whether or not you wish to participate. If you opt-out, the coupons will not be sent to your customers. If you opt-in, they will be sent to your customers who were chosen by the manufacturer to participate. Customers who are invited by the manufacturer to participate in these programs must have met some sort of prerequisite- they must have a record of buying this manufacturer's products at your store at some point (manufacturers are not allowed to send coupon campaigns to customers who have never purchased their products before), and there may be a lapse in purchasing (we miss you, come back) or a frequency of purchasing (we love you and want to give you something as a thank you). 

Bounce Back Coupon

Bounce Back Coupons are associated with Adoption Programs. If a New Pet Owner chooses to redeem an Adoption Program that is associated with a Bounce Back Coupon (it will say so in the main description of the program and on the program card in Checkout) they will be sent an email containing a Bounce Back Coupon on either the same day, or in the next couple of days. The trick here is we want to make sure the customer is sent the coupon before they can finish the free good they just received in the Adoption Bundle they received. The Customer can only redeem this Coupon at your store. Once that coupon is sent to them via email they have 30-days to return to your store and redeem their coupon. There is no way for you to opt-out of this coupon- the act of your redeeming the Adoption Program for the customer will serve as your opt-in. The coupon is designed to get the customer to return to your store one more time so that you have another opportunity to build their loyalty. When they redeem a Bounce Back Coupon it will also add a purchase credit to a Frequent Buyer card. 

How to Build Pet Owner Awareness of Coupons

Astro Coupons have been part of our platform since 2020, starting with "Sharing the Love" Adoption Rewards. Since then, thousands of Dollars Off coupons have been issued—yet only a small fraction have been redeemed. That means countless dollars in savings are going unclaimed, simply because customers don’t realize they have a coupon waiting for them.

We’ve found that the biggest barrier to redemption is awareness—pet owners are missing out because they don’t know these rewards exist. To bridge this gap, we’ve introduced new tools to boost visibility and encourage redemption. However, your role as a retailer is crucial in making sure your customers connect with these resources. Here's how you can help your customers find their coupons.

Eligible Customers can Preview their Coupons on the Astro Mobile App

Your Customizable Astro Mobile App
Every Astro Retailer has access to their own custom-branded Astro Mobile App. With the recent update, the "My Coupons" menu automatically appears when a coupon is issued to a customer, making it easier for them to track and be alerted to exclusive rewards.

When a customer receives an exclusive MFG Sponsored Coupon, they’ll see a "My Coupons" section in their Astro Mobile App, where they can view their offer details. This menu only appears when an active coupon is available, ensuring customers see their rewards at the right time. However, the app isn’t required to redeem a coupon—customers can still claim their offers in-store.

Help Your Customers Find Your App
Display QR codes in your store to help your customers find and download your Astro Mobile App. Your Astro Shelf Talkers (Offers & Frequent Buyer) all contain Mobile App QR codes. We also have a free Media Kit with printable signage, as well as a Canva library with table tents to display around your store and by your registers. You can also grab a QR code from your Mobile App Customization menu and design your own printable media.
